Should You Really be Putting Collagen in Your Coffee? Here's What We Found Out

Can I put collagen in my coffee? Will the heat affect the collagen’s effectiveness? These questions have stirred up a steamy discussion among collagen lovers as of late.

So, we went straight to the science to get answers…

Coffee With Collagen: What Do I Need to Know?

Coffee and collagen have become quite the dynamic duo. (In fact, a recent poll in our Private Facebook Community found that 61% of voters prefer their collagen in their morning cup of coffee.)

But alas, this 2019 article begs to differ (1)...

So, what gives? Can you put collagen in your coffee? Or should it be avoided at all costs?

Well, there are two things to know…

1. Collagen degrades at a temperature of 572°F.

Since the average temperature of brewed coffee is between 195 and 205°F, collagen doesn’t “melt” away in coffee like the article claims it does (2, 3).

If the above point doesn’t resolve this “coffee with collagen” debate, then this scientific study should…

2. In 2012, an important study was carried out.

85 female participants were split into three groups of 28 or 29—with skin hydration, elasticity, wrinkles, and roughness being measured (4). The first group was given 5 grams of conventional collagen peptides, the second group was given 5 grams of bioactive collagen peptides, and the last group was given a placebo. Each group consumed their sample in coffee, tea, hot milk, or any other beverage.

As expected, both the conventional collagen and bioactive collagen groups showed a significant improvement in skin moisture, wrinkles, and roughness compared to that of the placebo group. Not only that, the bioactive collagen group experienced an even greater improvement in elasticity, wrinkles, and wrinkle depth compared to the conventional collagen group. And may I just point out…the individuals in the collagen groups were taking it with a hot beverage.

So, Can I Put Collagen in My Coffee?

Yes, you can. By adding a scoop or two of hydrolyzed collagen powder to your coffee, you’re essentially turning that average cup of joe into a superfood beverage that promotes healthy bones, joints, skin, hair, nails, AND digestive lining (5, 6, 7).

So why not get a morning pick-me-up and a youthful boost at the same time?

The Best Collagen Powder for Your Coffee

Before you click out of this article, I want to bring up an important reminder: Not all collagen is created equal! Many of the collagen supplements out there are low-quality, multi-collagen supplements sourced from questionable sources. So, be sure to do your research.

At NativePath, we take our collagen’s quality very seriously. That’s why you’ll only find Grass-Fed Collagen Peptides with Type 1 and Type 3 Collagen (AKA the two most abundant types of collagen in your body) (8). All of our collagen is sourced from pastures throughout South America and produced in the United States in a GMP-Certified Facility.

Hi, I have been taking your collagen for years and very pleased. However I take it for my joints – primarily – I have bone on bone knee. Is there anything else to increase the effectiveness on my bone on bone knee problems ? Thanks

NativePath replied:
I’m sorry to hear about your bone-on-bone pain in your knee — that sounds painful. Luckily, you’re taking the right steps to ease it. In addition to your collagen supplementation, I’d recommend adding a krill oil supplement and a turmeric supplement to your wellness routine to help soothe inflammation. As always, consult your doctor before starting any new dietary supplements to ensure there are no negative interactions with other medications or supplements you may be taking. I have read you need to have an empty stomach before taking this & then wait a 1/2 hr, would this be true?

Based on what I’ve seen, you are fine to take collagen with or without food. It won’t affect the health benefits.

Do you actually recommending using coffee power with your Collegen powder? I’d think this shoulder be a good flavorable mix. Should I actually ask my Doctor for advice for long-term use? Awaiting for your response for long term use. Thank you!

NativePath replied:
I always recommend running any dietary supplement past your doctor before adding it to your routine. That way you can be confident and safe about long-term supplementation. Many of our customers add a scoop of the Collagen Creamer (2.5g collagen per scoop) or the Original Collagen Peptides (10g collagen per scoop) to their coffee. The Original Collagen Peptides is flavorless and odorless so it won’t alter your coffee in any way.
